Team Edgar

In my opinion Edgar Allen Poe is the best between the two authors. He is very Gothic in his writing, and it is just an all around suspense that keeps my attention pretty well. Hawthorne is OK, but he drags on too long, and all of his stories relate to some harsh Puritan aspect. Poe does drag on quite a bit as well, but his are more interesting, not just filler that is almost impossible to make sense from. Also, Poe seems to be easier to understand, as far as his writing goes. It is more straight-forward with the story. On the other hand, Hawthorne rambles with complicated words and occasionally just puts in an aside directly to the reader in the middle of an intense situation. There is a broken flow. I also like how Poe makes his writing sound pleasing to the ear to read out loud, especially since he has added those little tricks of the mind with the word sounds. I feel like I can relate to Poe better because his stories talk more about the pain of death as opposed to Hawthorne's only talking about some aspect of his life trying to get over the pain of his generational sin. That seems to be all Hawthorne is intent on writing about. However, Poe actually had to go through many deaths and pains that were just so unfair to him.Overall, in my opinion, Poe is better.
